You Need to Know About API standard!

API Standard

There are several standards that can be used to specify the industrial valve such as:
  • American Petroleum Institute (API) standard
  • American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) standard
  • American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standard)
  • MSS SP standard (Standardization company for manufacturers of valves and fittings industry)
Each of them has unique specifications for the valves and complement each other.
Below is a set of API standards for valves, commonly used for general industrial valves.

API SPEC 6D

Specification for pipeline valves. API SPEC 6D adopts ISO 14313: 1999, Oil and Gas Industry – Pipeline
Transportation Systems – Pipeline Valves. This International Standard specifies requirements and gives recommendations for the design, manufacture, testing and documentation of ball, check, gate and plug valves for use in piping systems.

API 6FA

Specification for fire testing of valves. This standard covers performance testing and evaluation requirements for API Spec 6A and Spec 6D valves when exposed to specific fire conditions.

API STD 594

Check valves: flange, fin, wafer and butt weld. API Standard 594 covers design, materials, face-to-face dimensions, pressure-temperature ratings, and inspection, inspection, and testing requirements for both types of check valves.

API 598

Valve inspection and testing. This standard covers inspection, supplemental inspection and pressure testing requirements for resilient seated and metal-to-metal seated gate, globe, plug, ball, check and butterfly valves. In connection with Buyer’s inspection and any additional inspections Buyer may require at the valve manufacturer’s factory.

API 599

Metal plug valves – flanged and welded ends. Purchasing Specifications Containing Requirements for Flanged or Butt Weld End Metal Plug Valves and Flanged End Ductile Iron Plug Valves, Sizes NPS 1 to NPS 24, corresponding to Nominal Pipe Sizes in ASME B36.10M. Body to ASME B16.34 can have flanged ends and a butt weld end. It also covers lubricated and non-lubricated valves with bi-directional coaxial ports, and includes valves fitted with internal body, plug or port liners or with hardening applied to the body, body port, plug or plug port require.

API 600

Steel Gate Valves – Flanged and Butt Ends, Tightened Caps

API 602

Port, globe and check valves for sizes and DN100 (NPS 4) and smaller for the oil and natural gas industries.. This standard covers threaded, socket-weld, butt-weld, and flanged end compact carbon steel gate valves, size NPS4 or smaller.

API 603

Corrosion resistant bolted ball valves, flanged and flat butt welded ends. The standard covers corrosion resistant bolted bonnet gate valves with flanged or butt weld ends, sizes NPS 1/2 to 24, corresponding to nominal pipe sizes in ASME B36.10M, and classes 150, 300, and 600, as specified in ASME B16 .34.API 607 Fire testing of soft seat quarter-turn valves. This standard covers the requirements for testing and evaluating the performance of straight-through soft-seat quarter-turn valves when the valve is exposed to certain fire conditions defined in this standard. The procedures described in this standard apply to all grades and sizes of such valves made of the materials listed in ASME B16.34.

ANSI/API 608

Metal Ball Valves – Flanged, Threaded and Butt Ends. This standard covers class 150 and 300 metal ball valves with butt-weld or flanged ends for on-off service.

API 609

Butterfly valves: double flange, fin and wafer type. This standard covers the design, materials, face-to-face dimensions, pressure-temperature ratings, and inspection, inspection, and testing requirements of gray cast iron, ductile iron, bronze, steel, nickel-based alloys, or special alloy butterfly valves that provide tight shutoff in the closed position, suitable for flow regulation.
