Valve testing

Today more than anything, valve testing is a very important part in the valve industry. The globally increasing of products and reduction of domestic manufacturing has caused everything in the valve supply chain. It requires more testing.

Testing a valve

In order to test a valve, firstly a testing procedure is established. It combines the acceptance criteria and performance standards that the valve meets or exceeds. When it comes to testing standards one size does not fit it all. There are different standards and different testing procedures for industrial valves, control valves, pipelines valves and other kinds of valves.

How to test a valve?

This article will provide you with the information about the valve inspection and it’s testing in the operational plants and in manufacturing shops.

1.   Valve shell test

This kind of shell testing refers to the main body device. The valve is put on the test bench and they are opened half. Then the shell is pressurized with the ASME B16.34. It recommends 1.5 times the pressure valve rates. To pass the valve test it is very important for the valve that there should be no leakage while the function test.

2.   Valve seat leak test

This kind of valve test is done after the shell function test. It includes the same ASME and API standards with the shell guidance. One side of the valve is subjected to the hydrostatic pressure and the leakage amount is measured on the opposite side of the valve.

3.   Valve backseat test

The valve back seat function test is performed in the valve with the back seat feature. This feature allows valve packing and it is replaced in the service. In this function test the valve is fully opened and packing glands shall not be installed. Pressure for the back seat is the same as the other seat test of the valve.

4.   Pressure safety valve testing

Pressure safety is the spring loaded pressure relief and it is opened by the static pressure of the valve. It is characterized by the pop action and openings. When the inner pressure reaches the set pressure it increases the pressure. It overcomes the force on the disk. The closing pressure is less than the set pressure and it will reach after the blowdown phase is completed.

5.   Fire valve test

One of the valve function fire tests is having protection. In the fire test the valve is pressurized to high flames for 30 mins. During this testing the intensity and the leakage of both external and internal are measured. Through the entire test the level of leakage is accepted for the valve to pass the test.

Conclusion

Valves should confirm few leakage standards and many other things are also done. Valve testing and valve inspection are done after every 12 months and it helps the valve to work in the best condition. These things vary while depending on the age of the valve, condition of the valve and what types of valves are used.
