Types of control valves

Valves

As we have learned that valves are used to shut off, throttle flow and even change the flow. These kinds of valves are characterized by how the flow varies with the relation to close member positions. But few valves are typed according to the closure motion.

Control valves

Control valves are control devices that are used to control fluid flow, temperature, pressure and liquid level by varying the size of passage. The function of the control valve is to provide the control in response to signals from a control system. It uses positioner and actuators and they are considered as the final control element in automated control loop.

Control valve types

Depending on different kind of parameters control valves are classified as follows:

1.   Globe type control valve

Globe control valves are mostly used for control systems with less regulation qualities. Their characteristics are customized by the condition and they are safe to use. They had a reliable handling of high pressure and for high pressure multi stage design was used. The globe control valves need low forces but they achieve tight and low leakage functions.

2.   Angle type control valve

Angle control valve has designed the outer and the inlet and they are perpendicular to each other. It uses and works as linear motion to move the closing part in and out of the surface. These angle control valves are used for boilers and heating services and in piping systems as well. They are used where the space is limited and the piping system can be used as elbows.

3.   Butterfly type control valve

When we come to butterfly control valves we refer to its high performance butterfly valves and double and triple butterfly valves. In many applications butterfly valves are replaced with other types of control valves because they provide the same functions. Using a butterfly control valve in application reduces maintenance requirements and it also improves the flow accuracy. The control valves are also used to control water treatment because they help in providing the best seal and good water pressure.

4.   Diaphragm type control valve

The Diaphragm type control valve contains 3 main components:

·         Body

·         Diaphragm

·         Actuator

The Diaphragm type control valve is a dynamic component that isolates and stops the medium flow. The original valve design includes the weir on the body of the valve and the medium flows through the diaphragm seal. The main advantages of Diaphragm type control valves are that they are corrosion resistant materials and have slurry applications.

5.   Ball type control valve

Ball type control valves are used mostly in fluid systems and in many industries. They are used frequently because of their durability, low cost and excellent performance. They are not more effective in flow control than butterfly valves that need good control sensitivity. One of the main reasons the ball valve needs high torque to close and to open is because it prevents the operator from making good adjustments. These have high capacity and they can shut off tightly. They moderate pressure drop applications and the biggest drawback is that they tend to plug.
