What are API standards?
API is the American petroleum institute. It is one of the largest trade associations for the oil industry and for natural gas. It represents 650 and more corporations.
Why are API standards needed?
API standards help in ensuring the alignment and they help in creating the common language and working culture. They work as a team towards building an API product. If your organization is aligned while using the API products as the key for transformation success the API products become critical.
What valve standards does the API have?
Below are the standards that is handles by American petroleum institute (API):
1. API SPEC 6D
Used in pipeline valves. API specification 6D is adopted from ISO 14313: 1999. This standard requires and gives recommendations for the manufacturing, design, testing and documentation of ball, check, gate and plug valves for apps in the pipeline system.
2. API 526
These are flanged steel pressure relief valves. This standard is the purchasing specification for flanged steel pressure valves. Basic requirements are given for the direct spring loaded pressure such as pressure ratings, valve size, materials, pressure temperature and inlet and outlet terms.
3. API 527
Pressure relief valves and their tightness. It describes the techniques for determining the seat tightness of soft seated pressure valves and metals. It includes the pilot, bellows and standard models.
4. ANSI/ API STD 594
Valves check lug, flanged, wafer and butt welding. This API standards includes the material, layout, face to face sizes, inspection, pressure temperature testings and scores for two types of control valves
5. API 598
These include the testing and inspection valves. This standard includes the additional inspection and strain testing specifications for metal to metal, globe, plug, butterfly and inspection valves.
6. ANSI/ API 599
These include the metal plug valves end for flanging, welding and threading. A buying scheme for the metal socket valves includes butt welding and flanges iron plug devices. They works with flanged ends in NPS 1 through NPS 24 in ASME B36.10M
7. ANSI/ API 600
These include the bolted bonnet steel gate valves. It is used for natural gas industries and petroleum industries. It modifies adoption of ISO 10434: 1998.
8. API 602
It contains compact steel gate valves that are threaded, welded, flanged and extended body ends. These norms include compact carbon steel door valves in dimensions and lower in butt welding end, socket welding end and flanged ends.
9. ANSI/ API 603
Bolted bonnet gate valves are the variety of API 603. These include corrosion resistant, flanged and butt welding ends. This standard covers these types of valves in NPS dimensions. It actually corresponds to nominal sizes of pipes in ASME B36.10 M. It also includes the classes 150, 300 and 600 and it is indicated as ASME B16.34.
10.ANSI/ API 607
It includes the fire test for quarter turn soft seated valves. This standard includes the evaluation criteria and testing for the straight output when the valves are subjected to specific flame circumstances.
